Dark-fantasy Kyoto
Edo-period landmarks and wider districts are warped by Malice and progression barriers.

— Verified wiki & field guide
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is Capcom’s single-player Swordplay Action game set in a dark-fantasy version of Edo-period Kyoto. This independent wiki separates confirmed launch facts and official character records from advice that still needs retail-build testing, so you can find the right answer without mistaking speculation for a finished guide.

— About the game
Capcom sets this entry in Edo-period Kyoto, a city distorted by Malice as otherworldly Genma cross into the human realm. Miyamoto Musashi becomes the protagonist and bears an Oni Gauntlet capable of absorbing Genma souls and converting them into supernatural power. The late Toshiro Mifune serves as the face model for this rendition of Musashi.
The official genre label is Swordplay Action. Confirmed systems include Parry, Deflect, Issen, Break Issen, Oni Armament, Reflex Combo, Oni Strength, Oni Agility, and soul absorption. Dynamic Dismemberment follows the path of the blade, while Oni abilities can also interact with defenses, obstacles, walls, and ranged environmental puzzles.
This is a single-player game on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Capcom says the universe was rebuilt so newcomers can begin here without prior-series knowledge, and the story has no direct storyline connection to earlier Onimusha games.

— What the records confirm
The wiki treats a named mechanic as fact only when first-party material supports it. Exact timing windows, optimal upgrades, drop rates, and complete rosters require direct gameplay evidence and remain outside this overview.
Official demo coverage confirms all three systems. Break Issen can follow a fully depleted enemy Stamina Gauge, but exact execution windows belong in a tested combat guide.
Musashi’s gauntlet absorbs Genma souls and turns them into power. Daidara can consume souls Musashi has not yet absorbed, giving the resource system direct combat pressure.
Oni Strength can break defenses and obstacles. Oni Agility can carry Musashi across certain walls, connecting supernatural abilities with movement and route access.
The Oni Bow can target ranged Genma, trigger traps, solve distant environmental puzzles, and matter in at least one duel. It is more than a cosmetic ranged option.
Official previews describe tighter missions that flow into wider areas. Kyoto becomes more explorable as barriers and Malice clear, but progression still bounds where Musashi can go.

Capcom’s canonical release date is September 4, 2026. The date moved forward from September 25. Steam can display September 3 in some regions because PC release timing is presented by region and time zone; that display does not create a second canonical date.
The current official platform list is PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. PS4 is not in the current official list, and this site does not infer a future version from search demand.
Yes. Official PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo listings identify the game as one-player or single-player. The wiki therefore avoids implying co-op or multiplayer systems that the official listings do not support.
Yes. Official storefronts list a free demo featuring Sasaki Ganryu and Daidara. Demo save data does not carry into the base game, but keeping it can unlock the Kubi Akari Charm in the full game.
The current Xbox listing says the purchased game is cloud playable with Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate, but explicitly states that a game purchase is required. That is different from the title being included in the subscription catalog.
No prior-series knowledge is required according to Capcom. The universe was rebuilt so first-time players can jump in, and the new story has no direct storyline connection to the earlier games.
